Asset-Based Community Planning: Unraveling the Planning Puzzle

Planning a successful community-wide effort or team project can be a complicated undertaking. Even if you have all the right people at the table, how can everyone have a voice? What do you do to invite the creativity of community members and other potential partners? This workshop will provide participants with an introduction to key elements of successful participatory strategic planning including: creating a shared vision, building strategies based on local resources, and encouraging a learning community.

In this highly interactive session, participants will:

• Practice using a variety of techniques such as action visioning, cardstorming and asset mapping working primarily in pairs and small groups.
• Learn how to draw upon the wealth of local resources that can be found within every community.
• Explore the benefits of participatory approaches and use tools that are adaptable for use with diverse groups.
• Create comprehensive strategies to improve community health.

The participatory strategic planning methods are based upon CCP's nearly 10 years of experience working with collaboratives, especially those participating in the Community Partnerships for Healthy Children initiative. Many of these processes are documented in We Did It Ourselves: A Guidebook to Improve the Well-Being of Children Through Community Development, written by CCP and published by Sierra Health Foundation.
